So if love is not attachment, it’s not compassion and it’s not acceptance then what is love?

A.    Action

18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (I John 3:18) Note that the in the verse there’s close relationship between action and truth. Therefore, if you love without action you don’t really love. Because love is not only the spoken words it is action as well. The bible said: “For God so loved the world that he gavehis only son…” that was an action.

B.    Do the right thing

In John 14:15 the bible said: 15 “If you love me, keep my commands. Again it’s about action, do as I say and obey. So when the bible asks us to love our enemy, it means that whenever we are in a position to help that person we should do it. 27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. (Luc 6:27-28) So in other words to love is to do what’s right according to the Word of God. Some people might want to do good but their hearts is not in it; now the question is who said your heart has to be in it. When you say that your heart is not in it, it simply means that you don’t feel like doing it: I’m singing but my heart is not in it… The greatest example of love in the bible is someone who did something that he didn’t feel like doing. 30 I will not say much more to you, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold over me, 31 but he comes so that the world may learn that I love the Father and do exactly what my Father has commanded me. (John 14: 30-31) Do you think that Jesus felt like dying? No. The death of Jesus on the cross was an act of love for the Father. Love towards God is to completely submit to the Word of God, to put the will of God before your own will whether you feel like it or not. Let’s look at a number a verses in the bible where they all consider love and service the same. ‘To serve’ comes from a Latin word ‘servire’ which means being the slave of. When you are the servant you have no will.

  • 12 And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. (Deut. 10:12)
  • 13 So if you faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today—to love the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul —(Deut. 11:13)
  • But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. (Jos. 22:5)
  • 24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matt.6:24)

Most of the unstable Christians out there are serving the Lord base on their feelings, they pray whenever they feel like it, they worship and serve whenever they feel like it.

C.     Do the right thing consistently

When you love you don’t just do what’s right sometimes but you keep on doing it; I Cor. 13:8 says that love never fails. So when someone has the ability to do what’s right whether he likes it or not, we call that discipline. That’s what makes you get up every morning and go to work even when you don’t want to. In reality, love is disciple with the right motive. You might do the right thing just to show off and be prideful; that’s not love. No one can love without discipline, if you say that you love God then you’ll discipline yourself to spend time in his presence whether tired or not. You cannot love God without discipline, you cannot love yourself without discipline and you certainly cannot love others without discipline. In conclusion, love is not the opposite of order and love is not the opposite of discipline.
